Re-igniting My Passion for Photography

Rediscovering the Art of Capturing Moments

Photography has always been a cherished hobby of mine, a way to freeze moments in time and immortalize the beauty of our world. However, like many passions, it can sometimes ebb and flow as life's demands take precedence. Recently, I've found myself with a renewed interest in photography, and it has been an exhilarating journey.  With the every changing technology.  I have begun to focus my efforts on developing better skills around post-processing and printing. This blog post is a celebration of that rekindled passion and a guide for those who wish to delve deeper into the art of photography.

The Spark of Inspiration

It all began with a casual stroll through my collection of old photos.  Most of my shots are of landscapes and travel.  As I flipped through the pages, memories rushed back, and I felt a profound sense of nostalgia. I realized that my love for photography had never truly faded; it had just been overshadowed by the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The Magic of Post-Processing

Enhancing Your Vision

Photography doesn't end with the click of the shutter. In fact, it's just the beginning. The advent of digital photography has opened a world of possibilities, allowing us to transform our raw images into stunning works of art through post-processing. For me, this aspect of photography has become a source of endless fascination.

Post-processing is where creativity truly blossoms. It allows photographers to enhance colors, adjust lighting, and bring out the finer details that might have been missed in the initial shot. With tools like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, the possibilities are limitless. I found myself spending hours experimenting with different adjustments to some of my favorite older photos.  Each image became a canvas, and I was the artist, shaping and molding it to match my vision and recapturing those cherished moments in time.

Learning the Ropes

If you're new to post-processing, don't be intimidated. There are countless resources available to help you get started. Online tutorials, workshops, and photography forums are treasure troves of knowledge. I started with the basics – learning about exposure, contrast, and saturation – and gradually moved on to more advanced techniques like dodging and burning, masking, and color grading. It is a steep learning curve, but the initial results have been immensely satisfying.  While there a lot of individuals posting tutorials on YouTube, I am a huge fan of Anthony Morganti.  He can explain his workflow processes in a way that is easy to understand.  He has provided me very useful information that allows me to experiment and develop my personal workflows for various types of images.

The Joy of Printing

Bringing Your Work to Life

In the digital age, it's easy to forget the tactile pleasure of holding a physical photograph. Printing your images is a way to breathe life into your work, giving it a tangible presence. There's something magical about seeing your photos in print, framed and displayed for all to see. It adds a sense of permanence and accomplishment to your creative endeavors.
I decided to invest in a high-quality photo printer, and it has been a game-changer. My new Canon PIXMA Pro-200 is amazing.  With its dye-based inks the colors are truly vibrant.  The process of selecting the right paper, adjusting the print settings, and watching the image come to life on paper is incredibly rewarding. Each print is a testament to the hours of effort and creativity poured into capturing and post-processing the image. It's a reminder that photography is not just about producing digital files but creating pieces of art that can be cherished for years to come. While I do have many of my personal photos on display in our home, I am not anticipating adding to that collection.

Exploring Different Mediums

Printing also opens a world of possibilities when it comes to exploring different mediums. I have been experimenting with a variety of paper choices.  Each medium, such as glossy or matt, adds a unique touch to your images.  I have been experimenting with various options, discovering how the choice of paper and finish can dramatically alter the feel of the photograph.  I use quite a few of the Canon papers as they produce very good results on my printer.  But I also tend toward archival quality papers from Canson, Hahnemuhle and Moab.  They offer a number of professional finishes and weights, offering high-end consistency and quality for all photographers stunning results.

Sharing the Passion

Building a Community

One of the most fulfilling aspects of re-igniting my interest in photography has been connecting with like-minded individuals. Photography communities, both online and offline, are incredible sources of inspiration and support. Sharing your work, receiving feedback, and learning from others creates a sense of camaraderie that fuels your passion even further.

I joined several photography groups and forums, where members regularly share their latest projects, tips, and experiences. Engaging in discussions and participating in photo challenges pushed me to improve my skills and think outside the box. The sense of community reminded me that photography is not just a solitary pursuit but a shared love that brings people together.

Continuous Growth

Re-igniting my interest in photography is an ongoing journey of continuous growth and discovery. Every day brings new opportunities to learn, experiment, and refine my craft. Whether it's mastering a new post-processing technique, exploring different printing methods, or simply capturing a beautiful moment, photography has become a source of joy and fulfillment once again.  I have added some of my favorite photos on this website.
